The Compartmental Modeling Software (CMS) is an application designed and tested to numerically solve discrete, stochastic compartmental models of infectious disease transmission in the eradication or elimination regime. CMS enables both fast and flexible model specification for compartmental models as well as the ability to select from a wide range of numerical algorithms developed for discrete stochastic systems with low counts in compartments. The CMS application is particularly suited for building and simulating infectious disease models at the population scale where individuals do not have a significant amount of heterogeneity and transmission is entering an eradication or elimination regime.
Features
Features of CMS include:
- Simple configuration: CMS simplifies the process of building a disease transmission model with the specification of an input model file where populations, compartments, and the governing transitions between them are defined. This ultimately makes the model building and running process more accessible to users versus extensive software development to build a new code-base for each new model.
- Faster simulations: Compartmental models can run much more quickly compared to individual-based models, enabling rapid evaluation of potential disease transmission outcomes.
- Ideal for non-agent-based scenarios: CMS is particularly suited for modeling scenarios that do not require high levels of heterogeneity for each individual, focusing instead on aggregate population dynamics through compartment transitions.
- High-fidelity stochastic compartmental modeling: CMS allows users to construct compartmental models with discrete stochastic transitions. All of the numerical algorithms that integrate the model forward have been implemented from the scientific literature and numerically tested.
- Variety of solvers: The software offers many numerical solvers for simulating models, giving users flexibility in how they define and solve the model based on the characteristics of the model.
Our approach
Our approach with CMS is to provide a streamlined and accessible platform for disease modeling that complements IDM’s more complex agent-based models. By leveraging a compartmental framework, CMS offers faster simulations with simpler setup requirements, making it ideal for scenarios where quick and efficient analysis is needed.
