The Institute for Disease Modeling (IDM), part of Intellectual Ventures’ Global Good program, is committed to improving and saving lives in developing countries using quantitative analysis. The IDM team is composed of research scientists and software professionals who create advanced models of disease transmission, develop computational tools to inform global disease eradication policy, conduct analysis of epidemiologically- and policy-relevant data, and identify critical knowledge gaps. As part of our work, we routinely collaborate with groups at the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control, PATH, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, ministries of health in the developing world, as well as universities and research institutes.

This position is to assist in the assurance of business continuity within the IDM technical infrastructure ecosystem (i.e. desktops, intranet/Wi-Fi, virtual machines, databases, software applications, etc.). The position may be responsible for investigating and diagnosing network problems, collecting IT usage stats, troubleshooting the organization's IT systems and carrying out routine configuration and installation of IT solutions.

On a day to day basis, the position may be called upon to help colleagues with more basic IT needs. This may be done by sharing knowledge to help others, including setting up new users and managing backup, security and passwords.

Responsibilities

The individual selected for IDM System Administration & Desktop Support Internship will be expected to assist in:

  • Day-to-day operations and administration of IT systems
  • Automating server admin tasks including scripting and reporting
  • Technical support, including responding to JIRA Help Desk requests and working with users to resolve issues
  • Performance system upgrades and maintenance tasks, including installation and configuration of Windows and/or RedHat Linux operating systems, or administration of user accounts (in Active Directory or Azure AD)

Key Qualifications and Required Skills

The IDM System Administrator & Desktop Support Intern should be:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Computer Science, IT Engineering or related degree program. Recent graduates will be considered.

The IDM System Administrator and Desktop Support Intern should have:

  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Strong customer service orientation and the ability to present ideas in user-friendly manner.
  • Ability to manage time and resources effectively, document work in detail, and account for time accurately.
  • Foundational or working technical knowledge of one or more of the following operating systems or programs:
    • Windows Pro/Enterprise 7 or 10
    • Windows Server 2008R2 or higher
    • Linux (RedHat or Ubuntu)
    • Microsoft Active Directory
    • Microsoft Office 365 or SharePoint

Key Qualifications and Required Skills

In addition, the IDM System Administrator and Desktop Support Intern could have foundational or working technical knowledge of operating systems or programs like:

  • VMware or EMC/SAN
  • Remote Management and/or Remote Desktop Services
  • Microsoft Azure Cloud Computing
  • Database Management (SQL, pgSQL, MariaDB)
